After a seemingly endless winter in Kansas City, the idea of taking a sojourn to Brazil seemed like a godsend - even if the only way to accomplish that was vicariously through masters of the bossa nova. For the few hundred lucky jazz lovers who ventured downtown to the Folly Theater last Saturday, a vacation to the tropics wasn't such an arduous trek after all.

For a piece that premiered more than 50 years ago, the Martha Graham Dance Company's "Clytemnestra" remains energetic, interesting and dramatic.

newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble's Saturday night concert, "China Rising," was curated by local composers Chen Yi and Zhou Long. They clearly went to great lengths to present a program of very avant-garde composers who blend Chinese and Western contemporary classical styles, and ultimately it paid off for the audience.

Taiko simply means "drum" in Japanese. Although its roots can be traced to ancient court music, the modern communal taiko ensembles came about in the late 1950's. Living and working together in a Dojo-like community in the country, the musicians are free to focus on their art form.

Before Charlie Parker became an improvisational innovator and saxophone legend, the Kansas City native humbly crafted his sound in - you guessed it - a school band.

Beethoven's music demands much attention and concentration to fully appreciate, and certainly an all-Beethoven concert can be an exhausting endeavor for performer and listener alike. Music and Dance through March 24

by Don Dagenais

Mon, Mar 15, 2010

The Lyric Opera opens" Rigoletto," the classic Italian melodrama by Verdi, on Saturday night. With a cast of all-stars including three Metropolitan Opera singers, the production should be one of the finest in the Company’s history. The Harriman Jewell series also reaches a high point this weekend with the recital appearance of cellist Yo-Yo Ma in selections by Schubert, Shostakovich and Franck, along with three South American composers who should add an interesting Latin flavor to the proceedings. For fans of smaller orchestral ensembles, you have three wind symphonies performing this weekend, two of them in tandem: the Kansas City Wind Symphony and St. Louis Wind Symphony perform a joint concert on Sunday afternoon at Village Presbyterian Church, while the UMKC Wind Symphony appears at the Conservatory on Tuesday evening. Arnold Epley’s Musica Vocale gives a concert on Sunday afternoon, as does UMKC Conservatory faculty member Jane Carl, clarinetist, with several of her fellow instructors in tow.
