Kansas is proud to be the home state of two of the world's most beloved mezzo sopranos: Joyce Di Donato and Joyce Castle. Local audiences are accustomed to hearing them in recital through the Harriman-Jewel Series and at KU, so it must have been with some trepidation that the young Sasha Cooke took the stage at the Lied Center.

I have never been a fan of "stars" or "thumbs" (up or down) or other artifice when it comes to analysis. However, if I were so inclined, I would use all of them for "The Event." It was a remarkable, witty, irreverent and poignant introspection.

Rodgers and Hammerstein are famous for revolutionizing musical theatre. Their collaboration garnered 35 Tony Awards and 15 Academy Awards. However, before Hammerstein, there was Hart. The duo worked together from 1919 until 1943. Quality Hill Playhouse is currently running "Rodgers & Hart & Hammerstein," a salute to Richard Rodger's two great partnerships.

Now that final ticket sales for Kansas City Repertory Theatre's new holiday production of "A Christmas Story, The Musical!" have been tallied, artistic director Eric Rosen, who also directed the record-breaking world premiere, has announced that the production earned $883,151.50 in gross revenue.

Theatre openings this week include "Around the World in 80 Days" at Kansas City Repertory Theatre; The Coterie Theatre’s "World Premiere: Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi;" “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” by Sonlight Productions and one performance of “The Drowsy Chaperone” at the Lied Center. Plays continuing this week include "Glorious - The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins" at AHT; David Mamet's "Boston Marriage" with the Kansas City Actors Theatre; "Rodgers and Hart and Hammerstein" at Quality Hill Playhouse (read the review on KCM this week). Classical Music brings Cirque de la Symphonie, The Friends of Chamber Music presents Tafelmusik - "The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres." UMKC has many fine offerings as usual. The Friends of Chamber Music offers an interesting music of the aural and the visual with a performance titled "Tafelmusik - The Galileo Project: Music of the Spheres" on Sunday afternoon. You will enjoy not only the splendid Baroque playing of Tafelmusik, but also remarkable images from the Hubble space telescope, all in honor of the 400th anniversary of Galileo's presentation of the astronomical telescope. A competing event on Sunday afternoon will offer the musicians of Summerfest in an unusual winter concert featuring the music of several composers, including Kansas City's own Susan Kander. For fans of the keyboard, UMKC piano professor Jane Solose will offer a recital on Sunday afternoon. Dance aficionados will have an opportunity on Thursday evening to experience the folk dances of Mexico at the Lied Center in Lawrence with Ballet Folklórico de México. On Sunday evening, wind instrument devotees will be able to hear the Kansas City Wind Symphony in concert.
