La Traviata (The Strayed One) Opera Preview: Giuseppe Verdi (Joe Green) was the biggest composer of Italian opera from around 1840 until his death in 1901. While some may disagree, for consistent high quality music, plots, character, suspense, entertainment - Verdi was the greatest opera composer who ever lived.

Classical Review: It’s always a treat when The Friends of Chamber Music brings together two Quartets for an evening that culminates in the great Mendelssohn Octet in E-Flat Major, Opus 20. Performing in this case, we have one of the great Quartets of the last 40 years, the Guarneri Quartet, which has announced its retirement after this season.

After intermission, the concert concluded with the Music for the Royal Fireworks. It must be grand to be King and order your court composer to write 20 minutes or so of festive music to enjoy whilst fireworks go off overhead.

The Jupiter Quartet is one of a handful of young quartets on the brink of major stardom having already won the 2007 Cleveland Quartet Award, several major competitions and to cap it all off, they just won the Avery Fisher Career Grant. People—it doesn’t get much better than this.

It is always interesting to look at what a young soloist has recorded - and then see what they will choose to play in recital. Julia Fischer's recordings mark her as a "serious" artist who is choosing to pursue a "serious" career.

The Metropolitan Opera will again broadcast many of this season's operas in high def directly into your local movie theaters. These broadcasts have been very successful over the past few years, not only for their artistic values, but attendance has been uniformly excellent. If these were actual Hollywood movies, many of the broadcasts would have outsold all but the biggest offerings. I expect similar results this season.
