Citizens’ for the Arts Day at the Legislature, hosted by Missouri Citizens for the Arts (MCA), takes on February 8 at the Missouri State Capitol. Citizens Day is MCA’s signature event in the year-round efforts to advocate for continued public funding for Missouri’s arts industry. The day includes advocacy training, legislative visits, performances and the annual Missouri Arts Council’s annual Arts Awards ceremony.

The 59th annual Youth Talent Auditions, sponsored by the Topeka Symphony and Capitol Federal, were held December 17 in White Concert Hall at Washburn University. High school musicians from northeast Kansas competed for the opportunity to perform with the Topeka Symphony Orchestra and for scholarship awards.

The Charlotte Street Awards to Generative Performing Artists support artists living in the Greater Kansas City Metro Area. These awards recognize generative artists, meaning individuals actively creating original, new work in their fields- i.e. they are composers, playwrights, choreographers- in addition to very often being performers as well. Veteran actor of stage and screen, Gary Holcombe passed away on October 11, 2011 aged 66. Holcombe was a founding member of the Kansas City Actors Theatre and is fondly remembered for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge at the then-Missouri Repertory Theatre.

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept 15th to October 15th. Libby Hanssen spoke with John Currey, leader and founding member of Marimba Sol de Chiapas, who are celebrating their 20th year in Kansas City. She encountered this type of ensemble while a student at UMKC’s Conservatory of Music and Dance. The ensemble is different than any other in Kansas City and the instrument produces such a distinct timbre she was curious to find out more.
